Gibraltar’s largest ever international musical event was a massive success on Saturday as close to 10,000 music fans rocked for 12 hours to some of the biggest names in the music industry. An upbeat Culture Minister Steven Linares confirmed that the box office had been red hot on the day itself and even though doors had opened slightly late to allow for the setting up of exit signs, the festival had run smoothly with all acts keeping good timing and the day exceeding all expectations on most levels. “We’ve had nothing but the most positive comments from everyone and we now have to build bigger,” he said confidently enjoying the day with his family. The support for both local and international acts was solid with everyone dividing their time between the main and Radio Gibraltar stages set up within walking distance of each other. Local bands rose to the occasion and delivered some amazing performances. The international acts from Aplin to Lawson and La Oreja de Van Gogh were all-inspiring attracting large crowds. By the time Texas, Level 42 and 10cc took to the stage the stadium was reaching maximum capacity... by 8.30pm the crowd was ready to roar with Olly Murs and Emile Sande. This was a day for family and friends and it was encouraging to see the very young and the well-seasoned fans enjoying the music and joining in the fun filled atmosphere together. The organisers too should be patted on the back for getting the mix of music spot on. It was eclectic and it worked. Everyone had their favourite acts... their favourite songs, but all acts have new fans this week as well. From Olly’s long list of uplifting catchy numbers proving him to be an all-round entertainer, to the classic “Lessons in Love” from Level 42 to “I’m Not in Love” from 10cc, to the classy “Clowns” and “Read all About It” which Emeli Sande delivered in such a unique style and elegance. Lawson mixed with the crowd and found the experience as twittered by Ryan and Adam: “First show in Gibraltar... Amazing! Gib that was awesome!” A word also used by Level 42. “You are awesome” expressed Mark King. Sharleen Spiteri from Texas added “it’s a shame we have not been here before!” And there was a roaring yes to Olly’s question “would you have me back?” Sande proclaimed at the end of the night: “I had an amazing time, hope we can do this again. Thank you Gibraltar.” There is no doubt Gibraltar delivered a world class festival on Saturday but give a hand too to its traditional appreciative audience who lapped it all up, took in all the different sounds and helped make the day such a special event. The word in town: “It’s a hard act to follow... but I can’t wait for next year!”
